Word of the Week: Neurodiversity

By: DiversifyIT

Definition:

Neurodiversity refers to the natural variation in how people think, learn, communicate, process information, and experience the world. It recognises that neurological differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, and other cognitive variations are part of normal human diversity rather than something that should automatically be viewed as deficits or disorders. In Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) contexts, Neurodiversity promotes the understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of different neurological experiences and ways of thinking.

Example:

Consider a workplace where employees have different learning and communication styles. Instead of expecting everyone to work in the same way, the organisation offers flexible communication methods, quiet working spaces, written instructions, and alternative approaches to collaboration. This allows neurodivergent employees, including those with ADHD or dyslexia, to contribute effectively and comfortably. This is an example of supporting Neurodiversity because the organisation values and accommodates different neurological experiences and strengths.
