IdentITy In Art– A DiversifyIT Event Series
How do your colleagues know who you are and what you’re about? Do you tell them through just your words and actions? Do you express yourself through tangible, creative ways? DiversifyIT knows that sharing ourselves as we want to be seen is a practice. It doesn’t happen automatically and thus, must be nurtured and cultivated.
In February, DiversifyIT will begin creating space in our calendars and in our lives to explore different forms of expression. Our fellow IT colleagues will share their practice of expression through their art making as an example of ways we each might find our own identity.
There is no one right way to share yourself. But when you do, DiversifyIT celebrates you!
“Living. Experiencing. Art.” – Wednesday, Feb. 9 @ 2 – 3:30 p.m. with ANGIE JONES
Join Angie Jones (https://www.instagram.com/indigomoonartistic/ and https://www.indigomoonartistic.com/) in a energy-filled hour about how material expression has supported and sustained her. “I need this for me!” she says. Angie creates physical pieces through many material forms. Get special access to Angie’s creative space and process as she walks us through everything from how she sources her materials (and why it’s so important to consider that) to the therapy she receives from it. No registration is required.

“Each Piece Has A Purpose” – Friday, Feb. 25th @ 1 – 2:30 p.m. with J. BRANDON JOHNSON
The value of community is best shown when it represented an organized collective. Brandon Johnson has designed a special communal piece for the DiversifyIT community to build together. Through the a fragmented mixed media composition style Brandon invented call “wallffiti,” Brandon is able to form a larger piece from individual pieces with our community participation. This virtual session will be held with Brandon where he will tell us all about this medium and why it means so much to him (and you!). No registration is required to attend. Additionally, we will be asking for volunteers to participate in the actual creation of the first DiversifyIT art piece. Participants will be invited to receive a small kit of materials and instructions for completing a unique section. Think paint-by-number. Come and see what it’s all about! Volunteer registration will follow.

“Riffing IT LIVE” – Tuesday, March 8 @ 4 -5 p.m. (Plus post-event encore performance) with STEVE TOBACK
Being in IT rocks! Steve Toback has been playing guitar for over 40 years. It is a vital part of who he is. So when he comes to work as a Duke IT professional, he brings the gifts he’s learned being a guitar player. And he finds that it informs and supports his work as a technologist perfectly. In this virtual session, he will treat us to a special interactive experience from his home studio where he performs guitar and his technology role for the University. He’ll explain how these two identities have merged in a way that Steve finds make both better than if he focused on just one. No registration required. And also plan to stick around after the conversation for a post-event encore performance.
